Lifesaver lollies one of the classic Australian lollies. From the classic peppermint to the musk and tangy tingles we have them all!
It’s amazing. The coolest products around the world evolve for the simplest of reasons. For example, Arthur Fry invented the post-it note because he wanted adhesive bookmarks to mark his favourite tunes in the hymnal. Then there was Pietro Ferrero, who added hazelnuts to his chocolate spread just to save some money, and the world subsequently went nuts for Nutella. Similarly, candy connoisseur Clarence Crane invented little ring-shaped hard candies in his candy factory because he wanted a summer treat that would withstand the blazing Ohio heat better than chocolate. The resulting Lifesaver lollies might have been small and unassuming, but more than 100 years later, we’re still sucking on Lifesavers left right and centre. Some clever marketing by successor Edward John Noble encouraged customers to buy the mini Lifesavers lollies with their change at grocery stores and cash registers - they went for 0.05 USD well into the 1950’s. Noble was additionally responsible for the revolutionary tin foil packaging that locked in freshness - today, aluminium foil replaces the tin. The popularity of Lifesavers continued to soar and various new flavours were developed. Australia got in on the Lifesavers love in the 1930‘s, when MacRobertson began to distribute them to lolly shops and grocery stores. Soldiers snacked on more than 23 million boxes of Lifesavers during World War II, and even now, Lifesaver lollies remain a part of the G.I. field ration kit in the United States. Wrigley’s took over in 2004 and Lifesavers celebrated a centenary in 2012. Some of the most memorable Lifesavers slogans over the years include “The Candy with the Hole”, “A Hole Lot of Fun”, and of course, the Australian campaign “Get a Hole Lot More Outta Life” from the late 1980’s. Nowadays, the Lifesaver lolly range is extensive: it’s not just about the classic hard candies, but also Gummies, Sours, mints, and sugar free varieties.
